Our Wine

La Volpe Rossa is our Nebbiolo, grown on the hills of Masserano in Alto Piemonte. The first wine from our restored vineyard, it marks the beginning of a new chapter for Vigne di Sossi.

The Wine in the Glass

Each vintage of La Volpe Rossa reflects the conditions of its growing season.

Typical aromas and characteristics are:

fresh red cherry and wild berry fruit

floral aromas

bright acidity

fine Nebbiolo tannins

ability to age well

Our aim is to make a Nebbiolo that is elegant rather than powerful, with freshness, balance and the capacity to develop with age.

Why "La Volpe Rossa"?

La Volpe Rossa means “The Red Fox”. The name and label were created by Alessandra, who also designed the visual identity of Vigne di Sossi.

Her inspiration came from one of Aesop's best-known fables, The Fox and the Grapes. A hungry fox repeatedly tries to reach a bunch of ripe grapes hanging high on the vine. When every attempt fails, the fox walks away telling himself they were probably sour anyway.

We liked the story because, unlike Aesop's fox, we eventually reached the grapes. After years of clearing woodland, planting vines and caring for them, they finally became our first wine.

And then there is Jack, our rescue dog. With his bright red coat, bushy tail and boundless enthusiasm, he has become the unofficial mascot of Vigne di Sossi.

HOW WE MAKE OUR WINE

From Grape to Bottle

Harvesting the grapes
Cellar work
Wine ageing in oak

1. Harvest

We harvest our grapes by hand when they have reached the right balance of ripeness and acidity.

2. Fermentation

We gently destem and crush the grapes before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Once fermentation is complete, we press the grapes and transfer the wine to oak barrels.

3. Maturation

The wine matures in oak barrels for between six and eighteen months, developing complexity while retaining its freshness.

Around The Table

Enjoying La Volpe Rossa

Ideal Serving

We recommend serving at around 16–18°C. Younger vintages may benefit from being opened or decanted about an hour before serving.

Food Pairings

La Volpe Rossa pairs well with roasted meats, game, mushroom dishes, risotto and mature cheeses.

Our Favourite Pairing

Good friends, a plate of salami and a kitchen table.
